I could conduct some interviews because I do know a handful of people who have studied abroad and would love to hear if they experienced culture shock and how they dealt with it. Hearing the voices of these people could be critical to me discovering something new about my question. I also think it would be really helpful to research any articles from people who have studied abroad and wrote about their experiences. I could definitely include anything mentioned about culture shock, which will give me even a broader scope of information to write about. I even could include a conversation I have with someone about his or her experience with culture shock. I even found an article about culture shock — what it really is, and how to deal with it. Just by skimming over the article, I am already getting excited to learn more about this. I think with all this research, I can discover lots of new things about culture shock and studying abroad. I really enjoyed this reading. The opening scene grabbed my attention right away. I think it was a really strong way to open the essay by giving readers a mental image of how her bulimia all started. She used lots of detailed descriptions, too, which kept me interested in the story. I was shocked at how young she was when this all started. I really liked how she included different stories of her growing up and developing a concern with her weight, along with different titles for each one. I also think it was cool how she added little poems throughout her writing, and how she openly talked about how hard it was for her to be writing something so personal. I was nervous and anxious. What if I catch a disease? What about warm water for showers and electricity? I had been on mission trips before but this one seemed a little risky. That Monday is a day I will never forget. Ten little orphan girls ran up to me with the biggest smiles on their faces and tackled me with hugs. Zambia is a nation in crisis. It has the highest orphan rate per capita in the world. The organization that we worked through in Zambia is a Christian organization called Family Legacy, which consists of one goal: transforming Zambia, one child at a time. Each of my kids were orphans, either having lost one or both parents. Even though these kids experience getting beaten, raped, one meal a day or none at all, not being able to attend school, they are still grinning from ear to ear. It makes me sad that here in the United States we have so much, yet they seem to be happier than we do. During the camp, I got to play with the kids on the playground, make crafts with them, and lead them in a big group worship session and a small group discussion. Through these activities, I grew close to my kids. They loved to play with my hair, draw me pictures, play games with me, and hold my hand. It amazed me how fast they warmed up to me. These girls were only six to eight years old, and felt so comfortable around me. Throughout the week, I got to take each child aside one at a time and ask them about their home life, and if they had any prayer requests. I wrote these down in a journal Family Legacy provided us with, so that I can always remember their struggles and what to pray for. Some of my girls live with a grandparent, or aunt or uncle, and get beaten when they do something wrong. There were bugs flying everywhere, and nothing but dirt, mud, and trash in my path. There were scrawny, stray dogs wandering around and some lying in the dirt. Kids and adults walked outside completely barefoot, and the entire community reeked of sewage. My mind was blown. How is it possible for people to be living in these conditions, and yet the kids even seemed excited to have me see their community? After walking through their community and being able to absorb how they really live, I have never felt more grateful for the life I live. We, Americans, got to stay in these beautiful villas the organization provided us with, with air conditioning and heaters, warm water, washing machines and driers, comfy beds, couches, and a communal kitchen. They were up high overlooking the nature of Zambia. There was nothing but trees and sky stretched out for what seemed like forever. One of my favorite things to do in the villa was wake up early, make some coffee, sit on the balcony, and watch the sunrise while reflecting on the day I had before. I always brought my journal with me and wrote down my thoughts and feelings. I wrote down my experiences and encounters I had with the kids so that I can look back and remember those moments. Those mornings definitely contributed to my growth on this trip, especially because I was away from all distractions — social media being a huge one. However, it was honestly such a breath of fresh air taking a break from it. I consistently thought about how blessed my family and I are, and how different our lives would be if we perhaps lived in a third world country.
